Shklovskii co-wrote the book Intelligent life in the universe, which takes the possibility of extraterrestrial intelligence very seriously, but also recognises the possibility that we’re alone. Later Iosif Shklovskii came to think that it might be the fate of intelligent civilisations to destroy themselves, which would explain why no civilisation appears to have spread through the Galaxy.
